Post Artwork Online

I write short stories but don’t know if it’s a good idea to post them online…?
I want to post my stories online to get feedback, as well as artwork that accompanies them. But I’m a bit worried that someone could take my work and pass it off as their own. This happened to a friend of mine and I don’t want to risk it happening to me as well.
Sorry if this sounds a bit naive or has an obvious answer, but I don’t really know how to go about protecting my work. What should I do to prevent this from happening?
chocoroco, it’s generally a bad idea to post your work online unless and until you are prepared to give it away. Even though you hold the copyright to it (without having registered it), prosecuting for copyright violation costs money. Unless the other person sold your work for a substantial amount of money and still has it, so you can get it from him/her, you end up morally victorious but out a fair amount of money. (The lawyers do well, however.)
It’s also a bad idea for the simple reason that potential publishers will not buy a work you have already allowed others to read for free.
If you want feedback, you can post it at a critique site which requires a password. I like the genre-specific Share Your Work boards at AbsoluteWrite quite a bit.
