Could anybody help me with understnding common themes in my artwork?
i.e what would a pyschoanlysist say of these common themes in my artwork/paintings;
Broken down buildings
Interior reveled to exterior (i.e wallpapers revelaed to outside)
Cracking and peeling paint
Internal doors exposed to outside world
Muted pastelly yet rich colours.
Sense of melancholy yet hope and beauty in simplicity
I wish you had put a link to several of your pictures … but they sound like ‘the thing five spaces after’ TRASH art. Trash art is NOT ‘trashy’ … in fact, it’s very detailed, and while some of it is of real trash, other times it’s of beautiful Victorian buildings and yards. What YOU need to do is set several of your paintings/drawings out, and see if you can’t find a ‘common thread’ that runs through all of them … and then you need to THINK about what you were ‘thinking’ when you did the work. THAT should be the ‘common theme’ … even if all it shows is that you can paint this one ‘thing’ better than any others. My husband is an artist, and his drawings (pencil and colored pencil) are very ‘deeply detailed’ and they COULD exist in real life, but they are always something he’s ‘thought up’ and drawn in ‘assemblage.’ I made up a name for them … the best have a ‘religious’ theme, so I called them ‘suprasurrealistic art’ … it’s a JOKE but it also works to get people who ask him ‘what he does’ to back off … generally it’s NOT the ARTIST who puts the ‘names and labels’ on the art, but the CRITICS … so just keep doing what you do, and showing it, and soon you’ll have your own ‘niche’ in the art world.
