Photographic Memory – Are All Children Born with an Eidetic Memory?

Photographic memory: Are we born with it or not born with it? Some say all children are born with this ability, and yet others claim it does not even exist.

The phenomenon of a photographic memory, or technically called an eidetic memory, is a very fascinating, and not well understood subject. Those who have this ability are able to recall highly accurate and detailed mental images and sounds with great accuracy in a seemingly endless quantity.

Many famous composers and artists like Mozart and Claude Monet are said to have had this ability. Others today, like Daniel Tammet, are living examples of the incredible learning abilities available in our brains.

This amazing ability is thought of as an unfounded myth by many. What our minds are truly capable of is hard to believe. There are new discoveries being made daily and still much is yet to be learned in the area of neuroscience.

Richard Welch, often referred to as the father of mental photography, for his research and training development in this area, believes all children are born with a photographic (eidetic) memory. He notes, that once we begin school and start to use the rote memory system of learning, our natural photographic memory gets put aside.

As adults, Mr. Welch believes we still have it, but have lost the ability to access it. Many people, after going through his training courses and seminars, have testified to this very thing and shake their heads in amazement at their own personal results.

The simple fact that regular use of a photographic memory is not common, or very well understood by the general public, seems to prevent those who do possess this ability from admitting it. A boy in my daughter’s school knows all the students’ birthdays after only hearing or seeing them once. Unfortunately he gets ridiculed and called names for being different.

I often wonder about those around us who seem to have an extreme capacity to learn simply and easily. Might they still have the ability to tap into their photographic memory? Could they be keeping it secret for the sake of fitting in?

Bottom line: Regardless of where your beliefs are on the subject of mental photography, and whether or not you subscribe to the fact that we are born with it, I’m sure you will agree, that all of us are capable of increasing our level of ability in the area of mind development.
